Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1999. He specializes in nanoscale laser materials processing, nanophotonics including plasmonics and photonic crystals, and ultrafast science and engineering involving photon-electron-phonon interactions in femtosecond laser processing. His group investigates fundamental thermal/fluid transport in micro and nano-systems experimentally and analytically. Using advanced micro/nano-fabrication techniques, his group develops biomedical micro/nano-devices such as 3D scaffolds for cell manipulation and controlled growth, micro-optics for cardiovascular imaging, and DNA microchips for disease diagnostics.
Among his numerous honors and awards, Dr. Chen received the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in 2004 and the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2001, the most prestigious awards to a young faculty in the US. He was also bestowed Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineer (SME) in 2002. At UT-Austin, he received an Outstanding Faculty Award in 2005. As a leading member in his professional community, Dr. Chen sits on many technical committees such as the Nanomanufacturing Committee of the ASME Nanotechnology Institute, the Nanorobotics and Nanomanufacturing Committee of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, and the MEMS/NEMS Packaging Committee of ASME's Electronics and Photonics Packaging Division. His leadership activities also include organizing and chairing technical conferences and workshops of ASME, NSF and other societies. Dr. Chen also serves on the committee for the development of State Strategy of Advanced Technology in the State of Texas. Dr. Chen served as a Guest Editor in 2003 for IEEE Transactions on Advanced Packaging: Special Issue on NEMS/MEMS Packaging. Currently he is a member of the international editorial board of a journal: Nanomedicine. At UT-Austin, Dr. Chen teaches courses including "Heat Transfer" (Junior), "Micro- and Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS)" (graduate), and "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology" (graduate). |
