We had our first (and only) tie! The Selection Committee couldn't decide between Tanya Martin-McClellan and Janie Terrel, so they both won! The Awards ceremony was held in June, with Dr. David Bogard filling in for Dr. Lamb, the Department Chair, as master of ceremonies.
Janie received the award for her tremendous work as the Resource Manager of the Robotics Research Group, housed on the Pickle Research Campus. Her nomination packet included several glowing letters of support from the faculty, students, and fellow staff in the Group, as well as an excellent presentation from graduate student Mitch Pryor.

Letters from students spoke about Janie's hard work, creativity, positive attitude, and support. According to the students, Janie " ... is the soul of our department in many ways ... a stellar employee and great friend ... [who] walks on water, turns water into wine, and makes this whole place run. ... Whenever needed, Janie is there with a cheery face to help us out."

Dr. Bogard presents the 'highlights'
of Janie's award qualifications.
One of the criteria for the award is the advancement of morale. To that end, "Tanya has advanced department morale in a number of ways. She is always helpful and cheerful to students, faculty, and other ME staff. Her knowledge and computer skills have earned her a reputation as an excellent source of information and assistance. Additionally, she voluntarily serves the department in a number of 'extra-curricular' roles."

Tanya is regaled by Undergraduate
Advisor Billy Wood and Dr. Bogard.
Tanya (just a few weeks from delivering Sarah) received overwhelming support from faculty, staff, and students in the M.E. Department and the College of Engineering for her tremendous efforts as Undergraduate Coordinator. Among the many people who spoke in support of Tanya at the ceremony were her supervisor, Undergraduate Advisor Billy Wood, the Undergraduate Office Advising Assistant, Lisa Vera, and Gail Simpler from the Cockrell School of Engineering Office Of Student Affairs. Our own Mechanical Engineering Department Executive Assistant, Jacqueline Erengil, delivered Tanya's nomination presentation to the Selection Committee on behalf of her many supporters.
The ceremony also paid tribute to Mechanical Engineering Staff who were honored by the University for their service and contributions. Bobbi DeAngelis received the UT Staff Excellence Award. We had several honorees for the UT Staff Service Recognition: Jon Bolander (20 years of service), John Pedracine (30 years of service), Sue Ponder (20 years of service), Cindy Raman (10 years of service), and Kathy Worley (25 years of service).
