JAMES SANDERS
ME STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT, FALL 2003:
|
|
The Fall 2003 Departmental Staff Excellence Award was presented to
James Sanders. Mr. Sanders works with students and faculty in the Electronics part of the
ME Machine and Electronics Shop. His primary focus is technical support for the Undergraduate
Laboratories in the ETC building.
|
|
Dr. Desi Kovar nominated James for his work with the Undergraduate Laboratories, especially the
Materials Laboratories
ME 111L and
ME 136L. In his nomination, Dr. Kovar emphasized the innovative practices James has brought
to the management of laboratory equipment, supplies, and specimens. He completely revamped the
documentation processes and tracking systems for all the labs. "The net result of James' work is that we
now have what I consider one of the best materials processing laboratories at any university that I
have visited in the United States."

James gets "the Big Check" from Dr. Kovar.

|
Mr. Sanders' supervisor,
Don Artieschoufsky, is in a unique position to witness all the many contributions he makes to
the Department. "He performs all of these job functions proficiently, which ensures a rich educational
experience for the students while insuring their safety. James stands out because of his excellent work
ethic. He gets the job done. To top all of this off, he is a team player." The students who have worked
with James describe his technical prowess and willingness to develop new approaches to problematic
experiments. When something breaks, he quickly and thoroughly repairs or replaces it.

Demonstration of "Team Player": James distributes the cake.

The evidence for James' superior productivity and innitiative is obvious. But the other criterion for the
Staff Excellence Award, advancing of Department morale, is simply overwhelming. In the many letters of
support from undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff, the point is made over and over again.
He utilizes excellent interpersonal and organizational skills in working with all strata of "customers" - students,
faculty, staff, supliers, and other external contacts. He instructs Teaching Assistants in the use of lab
equipment and is quick to answer help requests. "His cheery disposition, intelligence, and skill make James
a real joy to work with."

|
Dr. Eric Taleff, who has known Mr. Sanders since they were both employed in the
Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, says of James, "... one cannot
overlook one important personal characteristic which he brings to all his work, a quiet dignity and humility.
In a world that today comes across so often as loud and self-promoting, the good character exhibited by Mr.
Sanders is a refreshing pleasure to both students and faculty who work with him."
