The 2005 Departmental Staff Excellence Award was presented to Danielle Fournier and Albert Martinez. Ms. Fournier is the Alumni and Events Coordinator for the Department, where she works with alumni and corporate partners, produces Departmental publications, and coordinates events. Mr. Martinez took care of Departmental purchasing and accounts, as well as supervised the Area Staff.
Peggy Berry nominated Danielle and Albert for the award. She described their commitment to the ME Department's core values this way: "Albert and Danielle perform duties that are vital to the goals and values of the Department. While Liza was out (on maternity leave) they maintained calmness, rationality, and cheerfulness. Danielle, Albert, and Dr. Beaman
Danielle, Albert, and Dr. Beaman
Their commitment level was demonstrated by the fact that they showed up for work dependably and punctually. They are both dedicated to the betterment of the Department, which is also demonstrated by their attention to detail and to customer service."

Speaking to the way they both have improved the work process/efficiency, she noted, "There are three little but important words that sum up their efficiency: Things flow smoothly. When you ask for something you get it right away. Albert has budget numbers at his fingertips and there is little or no waiting for him to 'put them together.' Danielle stops whatever she is doing and helps the customer to the very best of her ability."

In support of this nomination, Dr. Dave Bourell pointed out the strengths of both nominees. "I have worked closely with Albert since his arrival. ... Albert was an extremely quick learner of the minutiae of our university fiscal system and departmental operating procedures. More than that, his 'get-it-done' attitude and service-minded approach to the office are a welcomed addition."

"Danielle has established herself as the department's alumni and events coordinator. These duties performed with success require that rare 'people person' who can see the big picture and also sweat the details. Dani has excelled in this position through the alumni communications, direct interaction with former students, and organization of major departmental functions for current and former students."

This year's award was combined for the two of them not just because of their exceptional work in their own areas, but also in recognition of the additional workload they took on during the maternity leave or our Executive Assistant, Liza Scarborough. They worked as a team, going above and beyond the normal job requirements, and did so with a positive attitude that affected the rest of the Department. That they were able and willing to take on these extra, and extremely important, duties is a testament to their excellence. Congratulations Danielle and Albert!
