Shaochen Chen
Dr. Chen specializes in nanoscale laser materials processing and surface analysis, nanophotonics including plasmonics and photonic crystals, and ultrafast science and engineering involving photon-electron-phonon interactions in femtosecond laser processing. His group develops biomedical micro/nano-devices such as 3D scaffolds for cell manipulation and controlled growth, microoptics for cardiovascular imaging, and DNA microchips for disease diagnostics.
Dr. Chen is a faculty member of the Manufacturing & Design program and the Thermal/Fluids Systems program of the Mechanical Engineering Department. He is a regular member of the Graduate Studies Committee of the Biomedical Engineering Department. He is also a fellow of the Center for Nano and Molecular Science and Technology at the Texas Materials Institute and MicroelectronicsResearch Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Chen recieved the prestigious CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2001 and the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research in 2004. He was also bestowed Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in 2002 and an Outstanding Faculty Award from the College of Engineering at UT-Austin College of Engineering at UT-Austin in 2005. As a leading member in his professional community, Dr. Chen sits on many technical committees such as the Nanomanufacturing Committee of the ASME Nanotechnology Institute, the Nanorobotics and Nanomanufacturing Committee of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, and the MEMS/NEMS Packaging Committee of ASME's Electronics and Photonics Packaging Division. His leadership activities also include organizing and chairing technical conferences and workshops of ASME, NSF and other societies. Dr. Chen also serves on the committee for the development of State Strategy of Advanced Technology in the State of Texas. At UT-Austin, Dr. Chen teaches courses including "Heat Transfer" (Junior), "Micro- and Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS)" (graduate), and "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology" (graduate). He has won a Best Paper award in AIAA in 2006.
In 2007, Dr. Chen was elected fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Currently, Dr. Chen is Associate Editor of Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology.
