Li Shi

Dr. Shi's research aims to provide technological solutions to contemporary worldwide problems in energy and environment, health care, and security. A central approach in his research is to manipulate and enhance materials properties at the level of electrons, phonons, photons, or molecules by engineering nanostructured materials. He further explores scalable nanomaterials with enhanced properties for device and system- level applications including thermoelectric energy harvesting and refrigeration, solar energy utilization, catalytic conversion, sensors and power sources for molecular detection and enhanced oil recovery, biomedical imaging and therapeutics. Dr. Shi is a faculty member of the Thermal/Fluid Systems program, the Clean Energy Research Area, and the Micro-Nano Scale Engineering Research Area of the Mechanical Engineering Department. He has served on the Cockrell School of Engineering faculty since 2002. Dr. Shi is also a faculty fellow of the Center for Nano and Molecular Science and Technology in the University of Texas at Austin Texas Materials Institute (TMI). He is a member of the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Graduate Study Committee of TMI. Dr. Shi received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2003 for his work on thermal and thermoelectric characterization of nanotransistors and nanomaterials, and a Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research in 2004 for research of nanostructured thermoelectric materials. He is a recipient of an Outstanding Reviewer Award from the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer, which honors those reviewers who have made exemplary contributions to the Journal. He received the Myron L. Begeman Fellowship in Engineering at UT Austin in 2007.
