Network & Security

Using a computer on a large academic network like the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin is complicated and requires a great deal of vigilance and personal responsibility. Fortunately, we offer a variety of networking and security options to meet the individual needs of allME students, faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees.

Anti-Virus Information - The Cockrell School of Engineering Information Technology Group offers information and advice for dealingwith viruses and protecting your computer from infection.

Ethernet Connections - Contact Peggy Berry for ethernet connections in ETC offices. She does ethernet orders periodically throughout the year. She will need to know:
  1. Who you are (faculty, TA, visiting post-doc, etc.)
  2. Where you need the connection (which office, and specifically, which location on which wall)
  3. Which account number is to be charged
Public Network - The Public Network is a collection of Ethernet ports in public areas across campus and all wireless access points connected to UTnet, the campus network. The Public Network allows members of the University community and sponsored guests to access University computing resources and the Internet from many buildings and common areas using network-capable laptops and portable devices.

Remote Access - Campus is not the only place where faculty, staff and students use computers. Many use computers at home or take laptops on the road. ITS and the Cockrell School of Engineering have set up their services to be accessible from your computer any where you may be as long as you have the correct hardware and software.

Secure Shell (SSh) Clients - You need to use an SSh client to connect to the ME server. This explains what that is and howto set it up.

UT Information Security Office - Secure and responsible use of Information Technology resources is everybody's business at UT. Find out what you need to know to use UT computing resources responsibly and help protect your own systems, UT systems, and those of other users.

UT Network Connections - Computing and network access is available to students, faculty and staff both on and off campus. High-speed and local dial-up Internet access is available in most computer labs and dorm rooms, and several campus hot spots support wireless access.

Wireless Networking - Information from Peggy Berry about the wireless network in the ETC building.
