Wireless Connectivity in ETC
Wireless networking is available throughout the ETC building. Some locations in the building will have a stronger signal than others due to interference and distance from the access points.
You will need to purchase an IEEE802.11b ethernet adapter for your computer, laptop, or pda. For more information see the UT Information Technology Services Wireless Information Page. Notice that there is a link for Equipment Recommendations on that page.
Wireless is not a replacement for the wired network because it is not a "dependable" network. The wired network is "dependable" because, in ETC, you will always get a high speed 10/100 Mbps connection every time you plug into it. The wireless network is "NOT dependable" because you (1) may not always get a connection due to proximity and interference, and (2) the speed is very slow, between 2 and 11 Mbps, again due to proximity and interference. Also, the wireless network will be part of UT's Public Network, which means that it will always require UTEID authentication every time you connect.
Note that operation of 2.4GHz cordless phones and microwave ovens, as well as personal wireless access points, may often cause interference with our wireless network. To help prevent as much interference as possible, we ask all faculty and staff to remove any personal wireless access points you may have installed in your offices. You are not being asked to remove 2.4GHz cordless phones or microwave ovens.
