This machine was used to manufacture novel graphite bipolar plates for fuel cell applications. The researchers won a best poster award for this work at the 19th International SFF Symposium. - This is a photo of Dr. Paul Ho, with a machine called a nanoindenter, which is capable of characterizing mechanical properties and behaviors of nanometer-scale structures. He was awarded a $159,138 NSF grant to study the buckling of nanostructures. Read more.

- The Department of Mechanical Engineering would like to congratulate Dr. Karen L. Nyberg (MSME 1996, PhD 1996), who returned safely and successfully from space on the Shuttle Discovery on June 14th, 2008. Dr. Nyberg, a Mission Specialist, was the 50th woman in space the only person to operate three robotic arms. In the photo, she is seen floating in the shuttle wearing UT socks. Read more.
- Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Adela Ben-Yakar has developed a laser "microscalpel" that destroys a single cell while leaving nearby cells intact, which could improve the precision of surgeries for cancer, epilepsy and other diseases. Read more.
