Mechanical engineering assistant professor Michael Cullinan has been selected to receive the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. The honor recognizes manufacturing engineers 35 years old or younger who have made exceptional contributions and accomplishments in the manufacturing industry.

Cullinan received the award for his work on nanomanufacturing processes and equipment, as well as the application of nanoscale science in engineering. His research focuses on the development of novel nanomanufacturing systems and on finding ways to exploit nanoscale physical phenomena in order to improve existing macroscale devices and to create novel micro- and nanoscale devices for energy and sensing applications.

Prior to joining the Cockrell School of Engineering in 2013, Cullinan was a National Research Council postdoctoral associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the federal technology agency that works with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards.
