Optimizing Corrosion Resistance for Brine Piping Systems

Requirements:
Pipe material selections were required for the final design recommendations. In this regard, the team evaluated a number of different pipe specifications and grades available on the market. Secondly, the team assessed whether ID protection was advantageous for corrosion resistance. Our research, including discussions with vendors, and an extensive design analysis, determined the optimal combination of these design parameters. Other constraints included pressure class, pipe dimensions, operating temperature and pressure, and service environment. Also, the brine piping system design is required to have a service life of at least twenty-five years.

Problem:
The team was tasked to develop a sustainable and cost-effective design to mitigate corrosion in Dow's brine piping systems. In doing so, the team focused solely on the inner diameter (ID) of the piping systems. Furthermore, although rehabilitation is a distinct possibility, the team concentrated its design recommendations on replacement of existing piping systems.

Solution:
Ultimately, the team offered design recommendations for both above ground and underground service. In the case of above ground service, the team recommended brine piping system designs consisting of standard welded carbon steel pipe, standard forged carbon steel flanges, and either a polyurea coating or lining for ID protection. Among other reasons, these designs were selected because of their high projected cost savings and long projected service lives. In the case of underground service, the team selected a design consisting of welded carbon steel pipe, forged carbon steel flanges, and a polyurea lining for ID protection. In addition to high projected cost savings and a long projected service life, the team chose this design because of its larger application lengths, which the team considered imperative for underground service.
