Welcome from the ME chair, Joseph J. Beaman, Jr.

The University of Texas at Austin Department of Mechanical Engineering. As you will see from the wide breadth of information presented and stored on this site, Mechanical Engineering at UT is a vibrant and ever growing department. The University of Texas Department of Mechanical Engineering is widely recognized as one of the premier research institutions of the world. The cornerstone of the Department is the excellent research talent marshaled here. The department's faculty regularly collaborate with faculty and engineers from other areas of the University and also with faculty from institutions around the world. There are nine areas of research within the Mechanical Engineering Department. These areas are:

The U.T. Department of Mechanical Engineering is currently implementing several new initiatives to meet changing world needs. For undergraduate students an academic program called Project Centered Education or PROCEED is currently underway. PROCEED is an undergraduate education initiative based on "just in time" learning. PROCEED drives the development of changes to curriculum, an increased ability to meet industry needs, an increase in industry funding, enhanced facilities and laboratories and the Student Code of Ethics.

Research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is centered on four basic thrusts: 1) mechanical engineering at small scales, 2) the design of intelligent human scale systems, 3) the development of efficient clean energy systems and 4) advanced manufacturing and processing. Advising consists of a faculty mentoring program, freshman interest groups and personal one-on-one advising. To find out more take a look at our Departmental Vision Statement.
