You're naturally radioactive

Radiation is all around us. It always has been, from the start of time. We, ourselves, are radioactive. The human body contains billions of naturally radioactive atoms. Mostly they are potassium (a trace element needed for good health) and carbon (a basic building material of all living things). The water we drink, the food we eat (e.g., bananas and potatoes contain potassium), the air we breathe, all contain radioactive elements that occur naturally and always have been on Earth.

These radioactive elements are found in human bones and tissue. They help archaeologists to estimate the lifetimes of ancient skeletons and mummies found around the world. The natural radioactivity in humans helps us to learn more about our ancestors. Another important fact to remember about our silent servant--the atom.
