A master's degree without a thesis or report is available by written petition only to the Graduate Studies Committee. This no thesis/no report option requires thirty-six semester hours of approved coursework. The petition, addressed to the Graduate Advisor, must detail the reason(s) for the request. The Graduate Advisor may approve requests for the No Thesis/No Report option either from engineers working full-time in industry who wish to pursue their MS degree on a part-time basis, or from full-time students who have extensive industrial experience in a field related to their concentration. In other cases, the graduate advisor will grant the request only after the petition has been approved by a majority vote of a committee consisting of the Graduate Advisor, Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee, and the Program Director.
The overall grade-point average (GPA) should not fall below 3.0 (this is computed over all the eligible courses taken while in graduate status). Only upper-division and graduate-level courses taken in graduate status at The University of Texas at Austin (except Report and Thesis courses) are counted in the average.

The association between the student and Supervising Professor is entirely voluntary on both sides. Entering students are strongly urged to take the initiative in becoming acquainted with potential Supervising Professors and selecting one during their first semester of graduate work. The Supervising Professor must be a member of the MFG Graduate Studies Committee (GSC). However, students with permission of the Graduate Advisor may select a co-supervisor who is not a member of the MFG GSC. In these cases, the student must also have a co-supervisor who is a member of the MFG GSC and only that member can sign forms identifying him/her as the Supervising Professor.

The Registration Information Sheet (RIS) is distributed each semester and lists the student's name, ID number, local address, local phone, and permanent address and phone. The RIS also lists advising information, telephone registration access times, and any bars that must be cleared before the student can register. Every student in the College of Engineering will have an advising bar indicated on their RIS. Bars must be removed by the office indicated on the RIS.
The MFG Registration Approval Form must be completed by the student and approved by the Graduate Advisor. The advising bar can only be cleared by obtaining approval from the Graduate Advisor (and Supervising Professor, if applicable) on the Registration Approval Form and returning the Form to the Graduate Coordinator in ETC 5.218.

You may add or drop a course through TEX during the first four class days of a long-session semester. MFG students must pick up their Registration Approval Form from the Graduate Coordinator and obtain the signature of the Graduate Advisor if they are adding a course(s) not listed in their degree plan. This form must be returned to the Graduate Coordinator.
From the fifth through the twelfth class day of a long semester you may add or drop a course, with your adviser's approval, in the office of the department in which the course is given. A copy of the final add/drop form with the Graduate Advisor's approval should be turned in at the Graduate Coordinator's office in ETC 5.218. The total course load should not fall below the minimum requirements.
After the twelfth class day of a long semester you may not add a course or change from Letter Grade to CR/NC basis or vice-versa only under rare and extenuating circumstances with the approval of the Graduate Dean.
In each summer-session term you may add or drop a course through TEX during the first two class days. MFG students must pick up their Registration Approval Form from the Graduate Coordinator and obtain the signature of the Graduate Advisor if they are adding/dropping a course(s) not listed in their degree plan. This form must be returned to the Graduate Coordinator.
On the third and fourth class days of the summer session you may add or drop a course, with your adviser's approval, in the office of the department in which the course is given. A copy of the final add/drop form with the Graduate Advisor's approval should be turned in at the Graduate Coordinator's office in ETC 5.218 The total course load should not fall below the minimum requirements.
After the fourth class day of the summer session you may add a course or change from Letter Grade to CR/NC basis or vice-versa only under rare and extenuating circumstances with the approval of the graduate dean.
You may drop a course, with your graduate adviser's approval, through the last class day of a long semester or summer term. You will receive a refund if you drop a course by the twelfth class day of a long-session semester or by the fourth class day of a summer term.
From the thirteenth through the twentieth class day of a long-session semester, and from the fifth through the tenth class day of a summer term, you may drop a course with no academic penalty; the symbol Q will be recorded. MFG students must request the Graduate Student Add/Drop Form from the MFG Graduate Coordinator. This form requires the signature of the Graduate Advisor and the Graduate Dean.
If you drop a course after that time, the instructor will determine whether the symbol Q or a grade of F should be recorded. MFG students must request the Graduate Student Add/Drop Form from the MFG Graduate Coordinator. This form will require the signatures of the instructor, Graduate Advisor, and the Graduate Dean.
If you are in a warning status because of failure to maintain a grade point average of at least 3.00 you may not drop a course without the recommendation of the Graduate Advisor and the approval of the graduate dean.

MFG x97 (197, 297, 397, 497, 597, or 697) is an individual instruction course of flexible format that can be tailored to a student's research related to the Master's Report requirement under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. There is no pre-designed structure for the detailed administration of the course, but there are several procedural policies that have been established by the GSC. These policies are as follows:
--Registration for MFG x97 must be on a CR/NC basis, unless the Supervising Professor desires otherwise.
--During the first week of the semester the student should choose a Supervising Professor to supervise each MFG x97 course for which he/she is registered. The faculty supervisor must be a member of the MFG GSC or the student's co-supervisor (co-supervisors are approved under special circumstances only).
--Entering students who are unfamiliar with the faculty should see the Graduate Advisor. These students are allowed to register for an x97 course on a CR/NC basis for their first semester by listing the Graduate Advisor as their supervisor. Entering MFG students are expected to use this time to identify a research area and Supervising Professor.
--The supervisor must be identified at the time of registration on the student's MFG Registration Approval Form and the supervisor must sign the Form if the student will register for MFG x97 on a letter grade basis.
--The Supervising Professor and the student should formulate a set of goals for the course and state these on the MFG x97 Form available from the Graduate Coordinator. This form is to be signed by both the faculty supervisor and the student and must be returned to the Graduate Coordinator before the fourth class day of the semester (second class day during the summer).
--As soon as the goals of a MFG x97 course have been established, the student is expected to spend at least 10 hours per week for every 3 semester credit hours provided by the course and to confer with the faculty supervisor on at least a weekly basis.
--Near the end of the semester, the MFG x97 Form on which the course goals were submitted will be returned to the student through the faculty supervisor. The student should add a brief statement of the work performed during the course, sign the statement, obtain the signature of the Supervising Professor, and return the Form to the Graduate Coordinator. This must be completed prior to the last day of classes. A grade cannot be entered on the gradesheet unless it is returned to the Graduate Coordinator to submit to Registrar's office.
--The MFG x97 course may not be included in the program of study for the MS degree.
