Fire Statistics and Causes of Domestic, Commercial and Wildfires

For the purposes of collecting statistics on fires, the collectors separate the types of fires into three categories: single-family dwelling fires, multiple-family dwelling fires and commercial fires. The following charts show the predominate causes of fires in these three categories.

#4 Careless Smoking

Data taken from National Fire Protection Assoc.

In single family homes, careless smoking is the number one cause of death followed by heating system failure. Heating system failure can be caused by improper maintenance or improper/unsafe methods of heating a house. In apartment buildings, the number one cause of death is careless smoking. In over 50% of the fires in apartment buildings, alcohol abuse and the impaired judgment it causes is a contributing factor to fires, especially ones involving cooking.

The location of fires in homes and apartments is illustrated below:

In these graphs, other refers to parking garages, outdoors, roofs and areas that could not be determined by fire examiners.Fires in Homes
