Fire Statistics and Causes of Domestic, Commercial and Wildfires
For the purposes of collecting statistics on fires, the collectors
separate the types of fires into three categories: single-family
dwelling fires, multiple-family dwelling fires and commercial fires.
The following charts show the predominate causes of fires in these
three categories.

In single family homes, careless smoking is the number one cause
of death followed by heating system failure. Heating system failure
can be caused by improper maintenance or improper/unsafe methods
of heating a house. In apartment buildings, the number one cause
of death is careless smoking. In over 50% of the fires in apartment
buildings, alcohol abuse and the impaired judgment it causes is
a contributing factor to fires, especially ones involving cooking.
