AFD/UT Papers
For a scientific paper to be published in a journal or most conferences, the paper goes through the process of peer review
(for journals, this process can take up to one year). Comments and criticisms from leading professionals in the field are made and provided back to the authors. Only after these comments are addressed and the critics all agree with the conclusions is the paper accepted for publication.
For the last 5 years UT has been continually working with AFD on PPV research. Currently UT has
several graduate students working on PPV related research.
Why is this important?
The results of our PPV research are scientific fact not opinion. These facts allow us to formulate tactical “best practices” using these principles along with our experiences.

- First full scale live fire PPV tests performs by AFD. AFD requested help from UT to interpret the results. This started the UT/AFD partnership. HWY 71 TESTS
- 2nd full scale live fire PPV tests perform by AFD and UT together. This test was performed more precisely and much was learned. PLATT LANE TESTS
- “Cold flow” tests conducted at Travis House (17th and Guadalupe St) last year. Whereas the first two tests studied PPV in single-family residential structures these tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of PPV in larger structures. Dr. Stefan Svensson of Swedish Rescue Services Agency collaborated on the testing and this joint paper was produced. The paper was presented at the Interflam conference in London August 2007. Some of the conclusions from this effort indicated ventilation training needs that are being presented in the Tactical PPV class offered this quarter. The beginning and ending of the paper contain information that is very applicable to the Firefighters.
