Title: Planning and Scheduling at Motorola
Abstract:
The semiconductor industry is notorious for exhibiting cyclical behavior
in product demand. Equally notorious is the ability of this industry
to answer
these cycles with
excess or insufficient capacity. Along with this phenomena is its
inherent nature of extremely long manufacturing lead times and processing
equipment characterized by high downtimes. These aspects coupled
with practically unlimited flexibility in customer ordering, offer opportunities
for numerous
planning and scheduling
techniques. Motorola and other semiconductor companies have made
many attempts in developing and deploying creative solutions in this area.
This presentation will provide some insight into these attempts. The current
challenges, limitations and opportunities in this arena will also be discussed.
