About this Course

In this introductory lesson we explain the navigation for the site, provide links to the syllabus and schedule, and introduce the computational tools that will be used to solve problems.

The first skill for you to learn is the navigation to the front page (home page) of the site, the lessons index, and the section index. Click on the Engineering Finance title at the very top of this page to return to the front page of the site. Click the Lessons title to go to the page that lists the lessons for the course. Click the title appearing just below, Project Finance in this case, to go to a page that lists the lessons in the Project Finance section. Buttons at the bottom of this page also reach the front page and lessons page. This navigation is used throughout the site.

Goals

Each lesson includes a list of goals identified by the bush icon. Clicking the icon opens the lesson summary page. The page opens in a separate browser window. We often use separate windows to present supporting material to the main message of a lesson. Be sure to close a window that it is no longer necessary.

Browser Page
  • Navigate to the front page, lessons page and section pages of this site.
  • Use the icons to the left of colored regions to open resources of a lesson.
  • Compute the course score using the weighting scheme described by the syllabus.
  • Identify the lessons that are to be studied in a particular day and week of the course schedule.
  • Find the dates of midterm examinations.
  • Open the toolbox of computational tools used by the lessons.
Icons and Media

Several media are used on the site. Click on the icon below to open a browser page that shows the icons representing the media. In some cases, media players are required for viewing, so be sure to download the latest versions of the players. The players are free.

Throughout these pages we highlight important information using yellow fields as below.

In general whenever you see an icon to the left of a colored region it will link to a page or file that opens in a window separate from the lesson. You may leave the window open or close it with the close window button.
Canvas

All aspects of the course are managed through the UT Canvas system. Although this Engineering Finance site is public and maintained separately from the Canvas information, students in this course are advised to reach its pages through Canvas. Lessons, schedules, notices, homework assignments, drop boxes for homework and exams, bulletin boards, grades and all other aspects unique to ME353 are maintained on the Canvas site. For convenience, some of these items may be reached from this Engineering Finance site, but the official versions are on Canvas. Clicking the icon below will take you to the site. You will need your UT EID to view the class information.

Text

Most lessons include a reference to the textbook. Click on the icon to open the table of contents of the textbook.

Text: Project Management
.

We use a yellow region to emphasize important statements.

The course does not directly follow the textbook. Rather, the book supports some lesson topics. The book is a good general reference for project management.
Lessons
For instructional purposes the course material is divided into a number of sections, which are then divided into a series of lessons. The Canvas site for this course specifies the lessons and the order in which they are scheduled. Lessons include textbook references, supplementary materials, lecture presentations, interactive exercises and self-test questions. The complete set of lessons can be viewed on the Lessons page.
About the Course

The icon below indicates a presentation displayed as a QuickTime movie. The movie looks like a Microsoft PowerPoint slide show and does not include narration. Clicking the icon should open the movie file in a separate window. Movie files are large, so you should set your browser to accept streaming media. If you cannot see the movie, you probably do not have a recent version of the Apple QuickTime player. The slides of the presentation advance automatically. You should see a control bar below the movie that starts and stops it. You can also stop the presentation by clicking on the movie display. Double click to restart it.

Computation

Several web-based calculators have been developed to aid computations. Some of the tools are programmed in Flash. To use them you must have a recent Macromedia Flash player. Click the hammer icon below to open the toolbox. If a tool does not seem to work, download a new player from the address given in the Media window.

Some lessons use Excel add-ins for calculations. You should learn how to install and use the add-ins. The link is to the Jensen add-in page. Instructions for the add-ins are reached by clicking the icons on the left of the titles on the add-in page. Add-ins are used for most events and homework assignments. The lessons will tell you which add-ins are necessary.
