Surface plasmons (SP) are waves that propagate along the surface of a metal. Upon light illumination, the free electrons of the metal respond collectively by oscillating in resonance with the light wave. The use of surface plasmons to concentrate light in subwavelength structures stems from the different permittivities of the metals and the surrounding non-conducting media. SPs offer much shorter wavelength compared to the excitation light wavelength and strong enhancement for the coming light. These features make surface plasmons very attractive for nanolithography, bio-sensing, and nanophotonics. Our group investigates plasmonic nanolithography and plasmonic nanooptics.
