We investigate fundamental thermal/fluid transport in laser nanomanufacturing using both numerical methods and experimental procedures. We are particularly interested in near-field and ultra-fast heat transfer involving photon-electron-phonon interactions at extremely short time and length scales. We also investigate thermal/fluid transport in biomedical micro/nano-devices such as a DNA chip where the control of temperature and fluid flow is critical to the performance of the device. We use a high-resolution infrared camera to measure the temperature and micro-PIV for the velocity measurement.
