Department of Mechanical Engineering professor Arumugam “Ram” Manthiram is one of 14 individuals this year to be elected fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS). Manthiram received the distinction for his pioneering contributions to the fundamental understanding and development of materials for energy conversion and storage, novel chemical syntheses, student education and leadership.
MRS, a leading international organization promoting the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research, extends the honor of MRS fellow status to members whose sustained and distinguished contributions to the advancement of materials research are recognized around the world. The 2016 fellows will be recognized this week at the MRS Spring Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
Manthiram joined the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as a postdoctoral researcher in 1986. Today, he holds the Joe C. Walter, Jr. Chair in Engineering and is the director of the Texas Materials Institute and the materials science and engineering graduate program.
His research is focused on lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells, solar cells and supercapacitors. Specifically, his research group is engaged in developing new, low-cost, efficient materials for clean energy technologies; investigating novel chemical synthesis and processing approaches for nanomaterials; and advancing fundamental understanding of nanomaterials’ structure-property-performance relationships.
Manthiram is also a fellow of the American Ceramic Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a founding fellow of the World Academy of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.
