Jianhe Guo, a Ph.D. graduate student and research assistant of Dr. Donglei Fan in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been selected by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to receive one of its most prestigious awards, the 2015 International Student Research Fellowship.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute chose an exclusive group of 45 students from 18 countries to receive the fellowship, which will support them complete their graduate degrees. The awardees will receive $43,000 during each year of the fellowship.
Jianhe has been a research assistant with Dr. Donglei Fan, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, since 2012. Dr. Fan’s research focuses on bridging the fabrication of nanomaterials with applications in opto-plasmonic biosensing, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), nanorobotics, nanomotors and energy devices.
With this HHMI award, Jianhe will carry out new research in developing an advanced nanomotor platform that will open an array of unprecedented opportunities in biomedical research and applications. Especially, he will realize the delivery, tuning and real-time detection of biosubstance release to designated live cells by the nanomotors in order to study important biological problems.
In addition to the prestigious HHMI International Student Research Fellowship, Jianhe also received the Materials Research Society Graduate Student Chapter Travel Award, the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Harris L. Marcus Graduate Fellowship in Material Science and Engineering, as well as the Graduate Student Professional Development Award from the University of Texas at Austin.
