Mechanical Engineering 1st year graduate student Borui Liu (Materials Area), from Dr. Guihua Yu's Research Group, recently won "First Place in Engineering" in the Texas Energy Research Challenge. The challenge was part of the 2013 UT Energy Forum where Liu's work stood out for The award included a trophy and a $3,000 prize.

The Energy Forum

Since 2010, the UT Energy Forum has organized the Texas Energy Research Challenge in an effort to promote the development of top-tier research. The focus is on novel energy and resource-related technologies, as well as processes and fundamental knowledge that can significantly improve economic security and well-being.

The UT Energy Forum held their first annual student research competition on February 21-22, 2013 to encourage and showcase cutting-edge multidisciplinary research. This year featured over a hundred applicants from UT and other top-tier universities such as Stanford, MIT, Rice, among others. All researchers presented their research, discussing it with attendees during networking and lunch breaks. The challenge presented awards in the following disciplines: Engineering, Natural & Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Students' research is judged on the following criteria: originality, academic rigor, potential impact, significance and quality of poster presentation.

Dr. Yu's Research

Dr. Yu's research is focused on the design and synthesis of new materials with rationally tailored nano-architectures and interfaces, the fundamental understanding of their unique chemical and physical properties, and the exploration of their applications in energy and electronics technologies. Borui's work is part of efforts in his group toward developing novel nanostructured materials for high-performance energy storage devices.
