Abstract

In the aftermath of the 2008-2009 GFC, the financial crisis in Greece became a humanitarian crisis for many Greek citizens. The financial crisis was still present in 2015, a year marked by a record high number of displaced persons, more than one million refugees and migrants, who crossed the Aegean Sea, mainly due to the war in Syria, to seek asylum in Greece and ultimately in other European countries.  The climate change impacts are more evident than ever; besides heatwaves and wildfires, Mediterranean cyclones belong to a new disaster type for Greece. Prof. Drakaki will present the situation in Greece and some of her academic activities from the perspective of humanitarian logistics/engineering and disaster management.
