Because mechanical engineering is one of the broadest-based fields of technical study, it is an excellent foundation for further education in business, law, medicine and other professions that require a good working knowledge of science and technology. The mechanical engineering degree plan at The University of Texas as Austin allows the flexibility to pursue these options within the ME degree plan, providing many electives that help students meet their career objectives.
Students with questions about non-engineering Career Gateway Electives should discuss options with the faculty advisors for non-engineering strands: Ronald Barr, Dongmei Chen and Vaibhav Bahadur.

Flagged Classes
Please consult the undergraduate advising office before signing up for flagged classes, as not all classes offered under the same name and course number will count toward your degree.
For a class to count toward your degree, the class must carry a flag, or the instructor must carry a flag. You will see a small flag icon on your degree flowchart if a flag is required for that course. In some instances, an instructor will carry a flag, and all classes offered by that person will be eligible. In other instances, only one class under a specific name and title will carry the flag and be eligible toward your degree. These designations change constantly. The undergraduate advising office can help you find a class that is currently available.
